Virtual Crew Familiarization Training
The Crew Familiarization is an all crew Training.
The Crew Familiarization Training (CFT) - to familiarize new crew members regardless of their previous knowledge with their new environment without availability of a physical ship or submarine.
The Situation
All potential crew members and embarked personal need to familiarize themselves with their customized, individual vessel efficiently and effectively to ensure an early operational and combat readiness of their vessel, its systems, equipment and crew.
Thus, crew members, who possess heterogeneous qualification profiles and are often spread across different naval bases, usually have to stand by until their assignment to a crew / crew rotation program and until the specific vessel including instructors is available for training purposes in the vessel's home port.
The Crew Familiarization is an all crew Training. Based on the “Overall Didactical & Methodical Concept” the Crew familiarization is the initial training for each crew member to get an overview about the entire boat.
Before starting into the details of general platform technologies, the trainees get an introduction into the philosophy and usage of the holistic training system. They get a first overview of the boat in VR including general information and superficially learn how to act on board within the different systems.
The learning objectives are:
Getting a basic understanding of the idea behind holistic land based training.
Learn how to move in VR.
Getting a first overview of the entire boat and the related systems.
Trainees feel confident with the systems design
Trainees are prepared for further and deeper instructions in the following Training Types
The Training Solution
Original 3D-CAD data enabled virtual ship serving as a scalable platform for individual and team trainings
Combination of computer-based training sessions for theoretical knowledge transfer and practical training on board of the client's virtual ship
Highly immersive walkthroughs using a first-person perspective
Familiarization with the design, layout, capabilities and performance parameters of the vessel itself
Self-paced learning about the location, purpose and features of major systems & equipment including visualization of covered installed systems to maximize the understanding of the room use, system architecture and connectivity
Initial training on the customized, individual virtual ship, which can be upscaled to a complete virtual ship with the system-specific training modules as needed by the customer
The Benefits
Increased ship / submarine availability because there is no vessel for the initial training required
Faster availability of crew for operations & missions
Reduction of risks for men & material by eliminating human factors as result of digital learning
No interruption of operation on board due to training sessions
Improved training efficiency and effectiveness resulting in an increase of knowledge retention by est. 75%, recall accuracy by a median of 90%, rise of motivation and training attractiveness by 98%
Quality assurance of training through standardization, flexible, goal-oriented use of training resources and professional learning process support; easy updates due to centralized training program administration
Cost savings (approx. >30% in total) due to less training time on board of a real ship (est. 60%) and higher training quality (see above)
Improved budgeting transparency, predictability & reliability
Cost efficiency due to one-time investment (no additional costs in the following years) and high scalability (within Immersive Training Courses one or more than 50 Trainees can be trained)
